Beautiful building and large quirky rooms but which suffer from lack of maintenance and proper cleaning. The floor was dusty and we even found a dirty tissue under the bedside table. One bedside lamp and bulb over washbasin were not working, the toilet seat was broken and there was an additional side lamp but no socket to plug it in. On the plus side we found the staff to be very friendly and they immediately provided the missing towel set and an extension lead when requested. Nice toiletries. With a bit more TLC this hotel could become a great place to stay. The dinner looked very expensive so we went instead to the friendly local Indian which we recommend.

We recently stayed in beautiful Castle Cary at the wonderful George Hotel. The staff are so friendly and helpful, always smiling! Our room had everything we needed and was very comfortable. The hotel was perfectly placed for visits to Glastonbury, Wells and the Fleet Air Arm Museum, so we had a great base to travel from and back to again. We ate at The George several times during our stay (breakfast, lunch and evening meal) and without fail, every time, the food was excellent, especially dinner in the restaurant one evening and the Sunday roast. We’d definitely book to stay again!

Went for a birthday lunch. 6 people, Very friendly service, well presented and tasty food. One starter was incorrect but without fuss was replaced quickly. Good menu range and lovely atmosphere with some fantastic decor and local art on display. We had a lovley lunch, thank you very much.

Awesome vegan burger and mango sorbet! Can't comment on rooms as I didn't stay but the food and service were excellent! The chips that came with the burger were really good too!

We used to love coming to the George, the food is lovely & it has a great atmosphere. However, we were shocked to see that the prices have gone up significantly, not just by a couple of pounds either. Nearly £20 for 'pub grub' fish and chips, lasagne etc is crazy. Not to mention the slightly 'posher' menu with dishes at £25-£28 each. On top of that, they now automatically charge a 10% service charge. Unfortunately we will not be returning as we do not like to be ripped off. Such a shame.

Superb place to stay...all staff were fantastic, attentive, polite. The rooms clean and well decorated, comfortable, the food was excellent (well done chef..even through a power cut)and the landlord who came to our rescue when the taxis let us down and went above and beyond his job to ferry us around. This is how a pub/hotel should be run. Again we'll done to all staff Inc the two room maids. Even the locals at the bar were talkative and friendly.. I would definatley stay here again. Highly recommended.

During a weekend stay in the area we ate lunch and breakfast here, also some drinks in the evening. The staff are all very welcoming, the lunches were enjoyed by all 8 of us, the portions are really generous. Breakfast was also really tasty and the service really friendly and laid back. The house cocktails are worth a try!

Hotel is in a great location and could not fault the staff - they were very friendly and welcoming. Sadly, the room felt quite tired and not that clean. We’re not particularly fussy but it felt like a bit of a rushed cleaning job. Hairs in toilet, cobwebs, dust, pillow cases not fully tucked etc. We do understand that it’s an old building but a little extra TLC would make all the difference.
