Dated hospital, but full of the most incredible staff!

Amazingly caring, kind and competent midwives, doctors and admin staff. Made a fairly stressful experience for us something we will remember positively forever. The midwives on the postnatal ward in particular were superhuman - always available for practical and emotional support and no questions felt too small.

The NHS obviously has its challenges, but the staff at this hospital reminded me how incredible it is!

I was an inpatient from the 06/05/2024 to 14/05/2024 prior and after having my baby, my son and I received brilliant care on Ward 76, and I received brilliantly care on Ward 73 prior to his birth, thank you for supporting this new mum to look after her new baby, he is thriving. Lots of love to all the staff on cds, Ward 73 and Ward 76.

Having being quickly referred by my GP as an emergency , within 3 weeks I had an appointment here. Staff were professional friendly and caring , under difficult circumstances. I felt reassured, and all questions answered. With such negative press around our NHS I could not have a more positive experience.

Awful induction experience resulting in an infection and a lot of stress due to two neglectful midwives. I would avoid this hospital if you can and avoid willow ward at all costs. My experience was awful, no hygiene on willow ward and very a handful of very cruel midwives. My only good experiences was with trainee or new staff, they seemed to want to help and be supportive.

If you do complain or want some resolution good luck to you as I was told I would get a “debrief” I have contacted the hospital and complained through pals and heard nothing back and I gave birth April 3rd. If you do decide to go here research and ask people who know people who gave birth here. I wish I did as what I’ve heard now matches up with a lot of my care and experiences.

I’ll never forgive a midwife called Helen. She was so cruel and told me I wasn’t allowed gas
and air as I was on an induction ward which I found out wasn’t true. Pain relief withheld. I waited hours and hours for an epidural.
My mum told a member of staff off for laughing at me when I wasn’t coping. I had a very stuck 10lb baby.
No one helped me afterwards- I couldn’t walk to get myself to the loo but was just left. I stayed in 3 nights and No one gave me any food or drink- my husband had to buy it and bring it in with him.
The consultant I seen 2 weeks later was also rude and patronising.

I have never had another baby due to the horrendous experience I had at this hospital.
I probably should have had counselling because I honestly believe the experience I had caused me to have PTSD

What can I say , disgusting care for my sister , she had a C section done at 13:00pm it’s now 19:47 and your still waiting for a bed supposedly for her on a ward . I am Wmas patient liaison manager at Ghh and let me tell you if the CQC found out that you was bedding a recovery unit they would have something to say . At GHH patients are moved on once they are stable & if a ward are refusing to take hand over the phone . Please send patients up with Sbar and give hand over at the desk . My poor parents are stood outside won’t allow her in . another thing my sister was told would require an operation on her heart following something that was picked up from cardiology ( 24 hour tape) and today suddenly ‘ theirs ‘ no problem found ‘ .

Have experience with the early pregnancy unit, gynaecology ward etc, all good hence the two stars, actual central delivery suite experience was also pretty great, special shout out to the night time anesthesiologist, he was exactly what you'd expect if it was a tv show with a night time anesthesiologist, can't remember his name but he was a long slim man who was lovely and made me feel at ease, doctors all generally lovely and professional, however my experience on ward 76, the transitional ward were generally pretty terrible, ridiculous heat with radiators on full blast during a very hot may, no consistent staff training, some lovely (Lilly being a particular stand out of caring, professional and understanding, also most of the other younger nurses and midwives) but some put me and my daughter off breastfeeding by being incredibly rough and forceful, allowing no time between different positions for baby to adapt, putting me in uncomfortable positions I already explained were uncomfortable especially having had an emergency C-section and a fall in the "accessible" shower and leaving two slashes and scars on my back where I fell against a hazard of an unfinished/broken bit of some kind of previous shower door? Which are still causing me pain and issues over 8 weeks later, many of the night time staff very uncaring, poor communication with daytime staff leading to some incredibly offensive and untrue comments that actually ended up unfairly getting social services judging me based on an ableist assessment of my parenting when recovering from over a month in hospital already with multiple severe pregnancy complications, underestimating my pain and exhaustion as "obs were OK", also having fibromyalgia my pain doesn't show like most people's so I look fine when im really not.
I was incredibly dehydrated for various reasons including virtually no chilled refreshments unless I went down to the pricy café downstairs, then to be kept in longer than medically needed to put me in a placement to monitor and assess my parenting, causing more stress, more time away from my home and partner, missed bonding time for my partner especially as the ward is not good for partners staying, just a solid chair in a corner and no food or even microwave available for them.
Overall the postnatal experience I would class as traumatic and would not recommend. If I have another at least southmead has air-conditioning a garden for fresh air and a Costa for variety.
