I had the best birth experience at South Lakes Birth Centre. The facilities are fantastic and there is a lovely welcoming feeling from the moment you enter.
The staff are amazing and couldn’t do enough for us, in particular Alice. Alice was our midwife for the majority of our experience and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better person to be in the room with us. She is incredibly knowledgeable and instantly made me feel safe and informed. I trusted her every step of the way and I’ll be forever grateful to her for helping us bring our baby boy into the world.

It was a crazy experience, was directed here for planned 38 week induction as a result of Lancaster being too busy on the night I was meant to go there. Never been before but the staff were very friendly and informative. Induction via dilapan worked surprisingly too well for what anyone expected for a first time pregnancy, and within 6 hours of having the rods inserted my waters were broken and my contractions were increasing with intensity. 3 hours later I had an epidural (which I swore I wouldn't get due to horror stories of friends epidurals going wrong). Did not regret a single second of it, the anesthesiologist did it perfectly and the unbearable back pain went away, I could still feel my legs and breathe through contractions, I managed to get from 3 to 7cm dilated within 2.5 hours and have had no negative side effects post birth regarding the epidural.
My babys heart rate dipped a few times during monitoring in that time frame and although I was progressing well it wasn't a risk worth taking so the doctors took me to theatre and it was an emergency c section that got me my son in the end. I want to thank all the team in that room for taking such good care of me, my baby and my partner. It was definitely a scary moment with a lot happening very quickly. My partner and I were both overwhelmed but the team were fantastic and kept us informed and calm as the delivery happened. We all felt very well taken care of throughout the delivery and thereafter. A particular big thank you to the midwives Jess and Emily, who made me feel so very comfortable with being at the hospital and what was happening throughout my stay, as well as the anesthesiologist whose name escapes me who did my epidural but more importantly kept me calm and informed during the c section, of which i was quite terrified. Im so very grateful to the staff at South Lakes for keeping me and my baby safe and making such an unprecedented and overwhelming moment in my life a positive experience. We plan on coming back here for any future babies that may come x

The most amazing experience!
I wouldn’t have changed a thing about my 2 night stay here. All the staff were so attentive and nothing was too much hassle. I’m so glad I made the longer journey here to give birth to my first baby. I have to give a special mention to the midwives who were there to give birth my my baby boy - Ella, who let me know about every step of the way, she answered all my questions (stupid or not) she made me laugh even when I was in so much pain. The student midwife Rachael who I was seen by in my clinic appointments in her last placement so I have seen Rachael right from the start of my pregnancy up to giving birth. She was so calm and collected and really knowledgable, she comforted me when she would tell I was struggling. And to the Midwife in Charge on that shift was Chantelle - Telling me I need to get this baby out now, I knew she wasn’t joking! All jokes aside, she was amazing too, very caring and again took me through every step of the way. Thank you so so much to you all, I hope in the future you’re all still there!

The staff here are incredible, they look after you so well and brought our baby girl into the world. Special thankyou to Jem who made us feel so welcome and put us at ease with her great sense of humour. Another to Nicola who was so lovely and delivered our little girl and kept us smiling. As much as I love this place we're not planning on visiting again ✂️ 😂

My son died because of the neglect of a midwife, luckily the surgeon giving me an emergency C section saved his life. The midwife told me my son’s heart rate was dropping rapidly and then sat there just smiling at me, if I did not tell her to instantly get me to surgery I fear my son would not have made it. She said we will just wait, it was the worst neglect I have ever received in a hospital. I didn’t see any other midwives only her. She sat through my whole labour and said nothing to me, I was so high on drugs because she kept sticking me with morphine in my leg to keep me quiet. So I was so out of it that there was no way I could have even pushed my son out. They sent me back and forth from the hospital over 5 times I was in agony and way above 5cm dilated but they still sent me home, the distress I was experiencing was so horrible. This hospital is the worst hospital in the whole UK to give birth in. I have a friend who’s child died and they refuse to step foot in south lakes birth centre as once again it was the midwives fault. If you are having a baby I advise you travel somewhere with higher care, because the midwives do not care about you in the slightest. I was also shamed for wanting to go home after 24hr being in the hospital they made comments at me and shamed me for not wanting to stay there. At this point home with my so. Was my absolute safe sanctuary but they just didn’t understand that and made me feel worthless for wanting to be home with my boy. Honestly they are horrible.

Traumatic delivery
The midwive on the night shift on 26th of February 2025 sent me home in pain, telling me that my water broke but I need to go home.I was in such agony, with contractions.coming every 5 minutes but she still decided to send me home giving me some paracetamol. This was my first pregnancy and I did know what to expect,I had all the support through my pregancy period, but my very important moment, the labour and the delivery were the worse case scenario.Going home I was in horrible pain so in 3 hours I needed to go back to find out that I was 10cm dilated and ready to deliver my baby. How was that possible me and my partner did not understand.I felt lack of empathy from midwive,it seemed that we disturbed her and my birth plan was totally ignored as I wanted an epidural ,which I mentioned to her as I do not want to be too late in labour. As a result of all these I needed a forceps delivery as this was the only intervention the doctor could do ,as my baby was too big and I was in labour for so long. The doctor and his team were very professional and everyone in the surgery room very nice and helpful. Thanks to them.we are ok,but all these could be avoided if the midwive from night shift would have been a bit more interested to help me.Overall I had a traumatic experience and I never want to repet it this again.
