The Integrated Approach: Pain Coaching and Alexander Technique

What distinguishes Martin Underwood’s practice is the seamless integration of Pain Coaching and the Alexander Technique. Pain Coaching focuses on empowering patients to actively participate in their recovery journey. It’s a collaborative process where patients learn to identify the psychological and behavioral factors contributing to their pain. This includes techniques for managing stress, improving coping mechanisms, and fostering a more positive mindset towards pain. The coach helps patients develop strategies for self-management, promoting greater control and resilience.

The Alexander Technique, on the other hand, is a gentle, hands-on method of movement education. It aims to re-educate postural habits and movement patterns that can contribute to pain. By becoming more aware of their body and how they use it, patients can release unnecessary tension and improve their overall physical function. The Alexander Technique is particularly effective in addressing pain related to posture, neck stiffness, and back pain. It's not simply about ‘fixing’ a problem; it’s about cultivating a new, more efficient, and relaxed way of moving.

I've done meditation, martial arts, yoga, physiotherapy, and pilates before, but Alexander Technique with Martin stands out.

It's like a moving meditation, a whole different way of thinking about how I move. I'd recommend it to anyone dealing with posture or pain issues, especially those who rush a lot. It's changed the way I move, relieving pain and stress on my back.

It's a unique approach that not only helps with physical discomfort but also encourages a more mindful way of moving through the world. If you're always rushing, overwhelmed, and it’s taking a toll on your body, give this a try.

Martin’s calm, caring, non-judgemental yet consistently encouraging manner coupled with his knowledge of Alexander Technique ensured that my health steadily improved and my neck pain disappeared.

Martin’s problem-solving approach, exercises and accountability to do regular practice helped me to break old habits, improve my posture and get out of pain.

I struggled with pain, and had to take ibuprofen every day so I could sleep. Martin helped me notice when my body was tensing, and gave me some simple exercises to improve my posture. Now I can sleep without painkillers. I'm grateful to Martin for his practical help, and also for his reassuring manner.

Martin helped me with chronic RSI in my arms and pain in my neck. Through small movements, working on my posture, increasing self awareness, and getting better desk equipment, the pain us now gone and I can sustain work at my computer. Thank you Martin!

Martin’s version of the Alexander Technique, with a more static meditation practice, a life coaching practice (exploring what people enjoy, what brings them flow states, what fulfills them) and a general health coaching practice (exercise, sleep, etc) is a great programme for those with chronic debilitating pain, for which the standard medical model doesn’t work.

As a doctor in the NHS, I found this both personally useful, and of great potential to the public and patients. The most useful aspect was the overarching sense of becoming more space and body-aware, akin to mindfulness in action. I think what I enjoyed most was being able to slow down and bring conscious awareness to fairly ordinary quotidian body movements. It felt relaxing and I felt lighter and more at ease both during sessions and afterwards. In the days afterwards I’d be more aware of my posture and presence in space, and would feel more inclined to ‘check in’ with my body

Martin has the skill of not only asking me the right questions, but then setting a chain reaction of me asking *myself* the right questions. Any problem I have presented him with gets looked at from several different angles and opens up a new perspective/ solution for me. I am always grateful when we have the opportunity to work together!
