When my Grandmother first arrived here, we were reassured that she was in the best place. However, over the next couple of years we became more and more unhappy. The activities shown on FB are really all for show, it is the same residents who take part in these- day in, day out (usually the mother of a member of the management team). On one occasion, a family member visited my grandmother to find her scream in the bathroom, whilst sat on the toilet being sprayed with a shower. The career did not try to reassure my Grandmother, or ease her fear, but instead just stood silently, continuing to spray water at her. There was no dignity for my grandmother at all. On another occasion, I arrived to find my Grandmother in bed, lying flat on her back, covered in her own sick. The sick has become dry and so had clearly been there for a while. The careers cleaned her up and told me, “if you wish to speak to the manager, she is in her office.” I did not go to her, as I felt she should be coming to me. We asked constantly for my grandmother to have her underwear put on over the adult protection pads, she only ever had the pad, another example of a lack of dignity towards her. My Grandmother was deaf, we asked nearly every visit, please ensure her hearing aid is in, yet almost every visit it either was not in; or had no battery/ working battery inserted. Meaning my poor grandmother not only spent her time not recognising where she was, but also not being able to hear a thing. This must have been terrifying. My Grandmother was moved to another unit where more bare was available, the whole atmosphere was horrendous, an agency member of staff told a family member of mine, the care on this unit was not where it should be. Over the years, we did come across some lovely members of staff, some that helped ease our anxiety when having to leave our beloved grandmother, however, they were over worked.
