On Monday, 9th December 2024 I had an appointment for a dental check-up and hygienist visit with yourselves at 11am. I have never missed an appointment at short notice (to my knowledge) up to that date and have been with you for many, many years.
Unfortunately, at 10.30 on the date in question, I found that my car had a flat battery and, living in Rothbury, I was physically unable to make my appointment. I then had to wait for the AA to repair my car and have no alternative transport.
I immediately phoned your surgery, apologised to the receptionist, explained why I was not able to attend to make the appointment and rebooked for a January date.
Today, I have opened a posted letter from a receptionist (un-named), informing me of your short notice policy, requiring 24 hours’ notice for a cancellation and could I bear this in mind going forwards.
Do I need to explain the ridiculousness of this letter? The waste of everyone’s time and postage costs? Also, insultingly, the underlying suggestion that I must have been lying (as how else would the letters request be relevant on this occasion?). I took all of the above action as soon as I could but still someone felt it necessary to send me a’ telling off’ note and request the impossible in the circumstances I was presented with and had taken the time to explain with an apology.
If I had known 24 hours before that I would have a flat battery, it would have been resolved on the day and I would have been there for my appointment. Unfortunately, I am not psychic and nor am I in the habit of just not bothering with a commitment on the day and lying about it.
If your immediate (and the standard but idiotic ) response to this is ‘well this is the company policy,’ I would suggest someone actually thinks first: is this circumstance actually relevant to our policy? Before wasting everyone’s time and frankly indirectly accusing someone of possibly lying. Either your policy is not fit for purpose or there is a significant disconnect between someone’s brain and a typing finger.
Your letter asks me to bear in mind your policy going forward, perhaps your new Company or staff need to bear in mind that not all unforeseen circumstances give us that luxury of 24 hours notice and also that such a follow up letter suggests that you felt that the person involved just couldn’t be bothered and lied on the day.

I called Market street dentist on Thursday 5th September after many failed attempts in other practices for an emergency extraction appointment. The women on the phone was lovely and very polite and booked me in for 11:20am the following day. I was extremely anxious for getting my tooth out but my dentist was very friendly and gentle, he explained everything he was doing and at the time and reassured me everything was fine. My tooth was removed and he told me after care advice. I would highly recommend this practice as not only are they welcoming but they’re understanding of people like me who are anxious of dentist. Thank you again Market street Dentist.

I've recently located to area & hadn't attended a dentist for a few years. My initial appointment with Josie was the most relaxed I've ever been(nervous patient!). A 2nd appt for a necessary tooth extraction was completed with so much patience & care that I wasn't even aware the tooth was out! All staff are friendly & welcoming & I look forward(that's never been in my vocabulary)to attending further appointments with Josie to dispel this awful nervousness. Thank you.
