As a virgin active it was great. In the past 10 years nothing but bad to say. Gym equipment is broken, never fixed just removed from the gym floor. Treadmills which cut out randomly.
Absolutely filthy. Shower's daily have razor blades on the floor.
Spa- is disgraceful, filthy!
Bannatyne must just be holding on to sell it surely.. if it wasn’t for a pool I’d be at JD next door, coach gym or pure.
When approached manager with these issues I was told it’s the client’s- gym was great once and it’s not moved!!

I have been a member of this gym for a number of years now (since it was Virgin Active). I feel compelled to review the gym because I feel it has significantly deteriorated in recent years whilst the cost of membership still continues to rise. My key observations which I hope the gym might address (and not just reply with a generic response) are outlined below:

- Facilities: it was the range of facilities that originally attracted me to the gym however over the past year, presumably to cut costs, the cafe has been removed. Also in the spa area the ice bucket is gone and currently (I really hope not permanently), there is no cold shower.

Another key facility which I have flagged previously that I really think should be provided, particularly given the other cost cutting, is secure bike parking. They provide this at the significantly cheaper JD Gyms across the complex and i feel very strongly that healthy travel is something the gym should be promoting. Having previously had my bike stolen from the external bike racks at cardigan fields and told by security ‘that they are not responsible for them’, cycling to the gym is not currently an option.

- Maintenance: the standard and speed of maintenance has dropped significantly in recent years. I do not suspect this is an individual staff issue but more likely a lack of staffing. To name but a few - water fountains are often out of action for months on end, there are regularly buckets on the gym floor to catch roof leaks for days at a time and the gym machines and spa facilities are regularly out of action.

- Cleaning: this is the item which I believe should be addressed with the greatest urgency. The cleanliness of the gym and particularly the pool, spa and changing rooms is really poor. Walking out of the men’s changing room in particular, the smell is quite disgusting. I believe a drainage specialist should be appointed to review the system and propose improvements, as clearly it is currently not fit for purpose. Similarly the smell in the sauna and steam room can also be very off putting. I believe generally a more regular and robust cleaning regime with a bigger staff base is required.

I would like to finish by saying that I have given two stars rather than one because of the staff who are excellent, particularly the front of house staff and class teachers. I really believe with some targeted investment, the gym could, for relatively minor expense, be returned to its former level of service.

I've been a member for 18 months

1. Machines constantly breaking and never enough clips for the cable machines
2. 2/3 of the water fountains have been broken for several months.
3. Gym floor is never tidy, members dont re-rack and neither do the staff.
4. Steam room/sauna usually break once a month
5. Spa pool has never once had all the jets working
6. Swim classes held only during peak times so lane swimming is limited and even then unenforced(slow people i fast lane and visa versa)
7. Bad smells in the showers, like full on athletes foot
8. I've had my towel stolen.
9. It's reasonably priced
10. Good enough variety of equipment.
11. Free parking( can get very busy)

Bannatyne Leeds.

What a phenomenal staff team! Especially the young lad on reception!! (Sorry I didn't catch his name!)

I am a member of the Wakefield branch and called the Leeds gym this morning from LGI children's hospital. After two days of not being able to shower due to caring for my sick child I managed to break away for a hour or so, rather than drive all the way home I thought I'd try the gym thinking it was a long shot as I had no key fob, no towel, no ID, nothing!

The staff were honestly amazing!!! Rushed me through had a towel waiting for me at reception, showed me where to go and sorted me with a replacement key fob in seconds.

You've restored my faith in people, I will be forever eternally grateful to you guys for your kindness! And I will be using this branch from now on! From the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you! x

Really don’t advise going to this gym if you are a woman and plan to use the spa facilities. I have been to the pool/spa area about 6-7 times now and every single time it has been me and about 20 men at the spa - not a woman in sight. Makes it quite an unconcomfortable experience - especially when men try chat you up when you’re lying on the sun loungers. Gym itself is good and staff are lovely - but the female to male ratio really makes it not a nice experience

I had spoke to 2 members of staff on the phone. Explaining I was coming for a day visit me and my wife. To travel 22 mile to then be asked do we have any photographic identification. So if yous are planning a visit remember to take identification.

Quite possibly the dirtiest gym I've ever been in, the spa area is in a disgusting state. Scum build up all over the jacuzzi, hair, spit and chewing gum in the steam room and sauna. The stairs down to the spa are black with dirt and the male changing room looks like it hasn't been cleaned in months. Gym kit out of order constantly with barely any attachments. Avoid at all costs.

Limited direct email communication to members when facilities not working. The spa area has been "problematic" at various times this past year. You just arrive & it's not working/closed. They have a full email list for ALL customers but seem to rarely use it to proactively inform customers. It's not difficult & it's about customer service. It's a failing which could so easily be remedied.
